Case Study: How Emy Uses WhatsApp Verification to Onboard Brazilian Students

When building digital products for young audiences, the traditional authentication stack often creates unnecessary friction. Here's how Emy solved it with WhatsApp verification.

When building digital products for young audiences, the traditional authentication stack often creates unnecessary friction. Email verification, passwords, and SMS codes can slow down onboarding and reduce conversion rates.

The team behind Emy, an AI-powered educational platform, faced exactly this challenge while preparing to onboard thousands of students in Brazil. Their solution was to adopt WhatsApp-based phone verification using Phone-Verif.

This approach helped them create a fast, familiar login experience while ensuring that every account belongs to a real student.

The Project: AI Tools for Interactive Learning

Emy is a SaaS platform designed to enhance educational content with AI-powered learning tools. It provides features such as chat tutors, flashcards, exercises, and automated grading.

The platform enables educational organizations to deliver interactive and personalized learning experiences through both web and mobile interfaces.

The immediate goal of the project was to support a large number of Brazilian students participating in a financial literacy olympiad. The system needed to handle rapid onboarding while maintaining high trust in user identities.

The Challenge: Authentication for a Young, Mobile-First Audience

Emy as a platform serves a broad audience — universities, corporate training, professional development courses, and more. For this particular project, however, the target users were Brazilian students aged 11 to 18. For this demographic, traditional authentication methods quickly become problematic.

Many students do not regularly use email, and some rely on shared family inboxes. Password-based systems also introduce friction and create support overhead.

However, there was one universal constant among their users: WhatsApp.

Almost every student already had it installed and used it daily.

This led the team to search for a passwordless authentication solution built around phone verification and messaging apps.

Why Phone-Verif

Several factors made Phone-Verif stand out.

The most important was its WhatsApp-native verification flow. Instead of sending SMS codes, the system lets users confirm their identity directly inside WhatsApp. Because students already spend much of their time in the app, the flow feels natural.

Integration was also extremely simple. The API requires only two endpoints:

  • start-verification
  • check-verification-status

The Emy team reports they had the entire system integrated in about a day.

Implementation: A Simple 3-Step Flow

The verification flow implemented by Emy is intentionally minimal.

1

The user clicks Start in the app. The backend calls the Phone-Verif API to create a verification session and generates a WhatsApp deep link with a QR code.

2

The user opens WhatsApp through the button or QR code and confirms the verification.

3

The application polls the verification status endpoint until confirmation is received.

Once verified, returning users are logged in immediately, while new users are redirected to the registration form.

The entire backend logic required roughly 100 lines of code.

A Familiar Experience for Students

Because the authentication happens through WhatsApp, the process feels intuitive to students.

There is no password to create or remember. There is no email inbox to check.

Students simply tap "Open WhatsApp", confirm the verification, and they are authenticated.

In most cases, the entire process takes less than 30 seconds.

According to the Emy team, the main user feedback has been that the login process "just works". For a platform serving thousands of students, they report virtually zero support tickets related to authentication.

Conversion Rates Above Expectations

Early metrics have been encouraging.

63% conversion rate

of users who start the verification flow complete registration — vs. 50% initially expected.

They attribute this improvement to the WhatsApp-native flow. Because users stay within an app they already trust and use daily, there is no disruptive context switch to email or SMS.

Strong Protection Against Fraud

Another advantage is identity assurance.

Each account is linked to a verified phone number, and verification requires a real WhatsApp interaction. This makes automated bot registrations extremely difficult.

Despite offering cash prizes in the competition, the platform has seen:

  • Near-zero fraud attempts
  • No duplicate registrations
  • Almost no authentication support issues

Operationally, the team highlights another major benefit: no password resets and no login support tickets.

Cost and Operational Efficiency

WhatsApp verification also brings financial and operational improvements.

SMS delivery in Brazil can be unreliable and expensive. By using WhatsApp verification, the platform benefits from both higher reliability and lower costs.

The frictionless login flow also supports engagement. Returning users can authenticate in seconds, which helps maintain high daily activity in competitive learning leagues.

Scaling to Future Projects

As Emy prepares to expand into additional olympiad seasons and partnerships with more schools, the team expects the same authentication flow to scale naturally.

WhatsApp already has massive adoption across Brazil, removing the need for user education or onboarding adjustments.

The team is also evaluating extending the same approach to other educational products running on their platform.

Final Thoughts

When asked to describe their experience with Phone-Verif in a single word, the Emy team chose:

"Frictionless."

For products targeting mobile-first audiences, especially in regions where messaging apps dominate daily communication, WhatsApp-based verification can provide a powerful alternative to traditional login systems.

As the Emy case shows, reducing authentication friction can directly improve conversion, simplify operations, and create a login experience that users instantly understand.
